“UgaliingMagtanim, SapatnaNutrisyonAanihin” – Our Lady of Caysasay Academy (OLCA) kicked off the academic year with the celebration of its Nutrition Month last July along the commemoration of the English Month. Goofs with excitement, and thrill – the aura that seamlessly breathes in the campus which gave OLCAns the drive to promote what being healthy does really mean; making it less of a habit but more of intent. Hence, the students marked this very gala by participating in various programs, contests, and picnics arranged by the school.

The level of the competition arises, given the heads-up on July 20, 2018, select Senior High School students were immersed in their respective activities, they are as follows: Grade 11’s Poster Painting Contest, wherein one representative from each section test the waters with his wide array of creativity while being tasked to paint posters relevant to the theme using the coloring material of his choice. In addition, three representatives from each section from the Grade 11 face the Kangkong Dish Cook-Off as they prepare innovative vegetable dishes using kangkongas the main ingredient. Moreover, in Grade 12’s Digital Poster Making Contest, wherein two contestants from each section is required, participants made posters aligned with the theme of the celebration through Adobe Photoshop and the same grade level met head-on with three participants per section in the Pakbet with a Twist Cooking Contest, where they served pakbet dishes in a different way by making a twist in the ingredients.

On July 26, the contests were back on the hefty road, selected UpperBEd students from Grade 7 to 10 withstand diverse competitions and vies for the laurel. The respective contests are as follows: the Grade 7’s were divided into two categories, Category 1: Fruits and Vegetables Expo (F.A.V.E) wherein seventh graders brought a variety of fruits and vegetables which they will exhibit on a long table displayed in their corridor, their products were labeled with their corresponding English, Tagalog, and Scientific names, together with its nutritional value. The students sold the products to the ninth and tenth grader participants to the Cook Fest. Category 2, the fruits and vegetables that the seventh graders brought, they will select the ones for the following categories: Rarest Fruit, Rarest Veggie, Biggest Guava, Largest Cucumber, Smallest Watermelon, Clearest Radish, Shortest Banana, Smallest Tomato, Heaviest Fruit, Shortest Camote, Lightest Orange, Leafiest Pechay, Sweetest Apple, and Biggest Cabbage. For Grade 8, in collaboration with the TLE coordinator, Ms. Grace Siscar and TLE 8 teachers Ms. Marilou Ilagan and Ms. Angelu De Villa, the eighth graders designed an urban garden (vertical garden) as part of their performance task from July 1 to 26, followed by Grade 9’s Vegetable Dish Cooking Contest and Grade 10’s Fruit Snack Making Challenge, wherein participants brought all cooking utensils and ingredients except vegetables and fruits which they should buy only from the the seventh graders’ F.A.V.E. The challenge was to prepare a vegetable dish and a no-cook fruit snack, respectively, without knowing what kinds will be available for purchase.

The harmonious symmetry between teamwork, trust, and sportsmanship brought OLCAns to bond together with enough understanding of promoting a healthy lifestyle, also in regards to this year’s theme, through application. Plus, the healthy picnics experienced by all grade levels that were spent with the second family in the academe through good food and music – it was another set of memories for the books.
