August 1, 2018 – For two years now, 12th graders as part of their Business Finance subject headed by Mrs. Wendy Marquez, the subject teacher open their own bank accounts to in still in them the value of savings. Last year the 12th graders partnered with China Bank. This year, East West Bank helped the students understand the importance of proper handling of finances as the representatives personally came to OLCA gymnasium to conduct a short talk about the opening of bank accounts and giving out the forms to be filled out by the students. A total of 80 Grade 12 ABM students opened their bank accounts during the event. It was done as the performance task of the ABM students of grade 12. The goal of the task is to be able to deposit an accumulated amount that they placed in their contracts written last July. The students wrote the desired amount they wish to save every four weeks of school and calculated the amount they should be having by the end of the semester. They will be graded according to how they were able to follow their contracts and if they were able to successfully follow the amount they were supposed to save. The event was done not only for the purpose of following the curriculum, but it also teaches the future businessmen, managers and accountants of the ABM strand the importance of saving and budgeting money, which they’ll be handling in the future.

This year was something more special as the 11th graders opted to join the said activity. Ms. Joan Perez who is handling General Mathematics, thought of joining the activity to help the students understand more the topics in General Mathematics which includes investments and interest rates. A total of 207 students opened their personal bank accounts hoping that they will be able to continue the endeavour as long as they can. As for the ABM Grade 11 students, they are expected to continue saving because it will be still part of their performance task in Business Finance next school year.

The two teachers, together with the School Administration hope to make the students know how to handle their allowances properly and to continue saving even after they are graded.
